One of our Star Magnolias started to bloom late last week. We have two of these in our backyard.
They are beautiful Spring bloomers, and I hope that these blooms will last a couple of weeks barring any heavy-duty rain storms. I planted them for their wonderful fragrance. They have a light smell of lemons that will carry about twenty feet with an easy breeze.

It is hard to believe that two weeks ago, we were just coming out of almost two solid weeks of freezing temperatures. In fact, there were some of the coldest days that I could remember in Dallas with the temperatures reaching as low as 12 degrees. We also were hammered by an ice storm and an additional snow fall of almost 8 inches.
Texas weather can be mercurial, however, and our temperatures jumped into the 70's for most of the last 14 days. This dramatic change in the weather for an extended period of time has my fruit trees thoroughly convinced that it is Spring. My fruit trees and bushes are leafing out, and one of my pluots is in full blown bloom, as you can see from the photograph above.
This is a 4-in-1 pluot made up of grafts from four separate Zaiger pluots - Splash, Emerald Drop, Flavor Grenade, and Geo Pride. Because the grafts were done in what appears to be a haphazard fashion, this tree has one of the worst limb structures, possibly in the world. But the variety will make up for its homeliness.
I was really surprised by how fragrant these blooms are. I can be halfway across my yard from this tree, and with a light breeze, the yard is filled with a wonderfully light vanilla scent.
When I saw this pluot blooming, I was very concerned that its blossoms would not get pollinated because it is so early in the year. I really had not seen any bees out at all. And last year was a terrible Spring for bees, so I was worried that we might experience a similar dearth of bees this year as well. In fact, I actually ordered some mason bees to help ensure that I have adequate pollinators for my fruit trees and bushes.
It appears that my purchase of the mason bees was not wholly necessary, because when I went out into the yard this afternoon, the pluot was surrounded by a wonderful mass of pollinators. Butterflies and several kinds of bees. I really have never seen anything like it, and I am not exaggerating. There must have been 30 bees visiting the tree. There is not that much blooming out there right now, so maybe all of these pollinators were drawn to the pluot out of sheer necessity. Although I am not an expert on identifying bees, I believe there were honey bees, mason bees, and another type of very small bee which I had not seen before, working on the tree.
I've attached several photos from this afternoon that definitely confirm that Spring is here, or at the very least, near.
Our average last freeze date in Dallas is not for several more weeks, so I am very concerned about these early blooms. My biggest concern is that the blooms will freeze before they are pollinated. Alternatively, I want to look into what will happen if these blossoms are pollinated, start to fruit, and are then exposed to a freeze.

I was pleasantly surprised to find this pink asparagus spear poking out of the ground this morning. It was fatter than my thumb and tasted like sugar coated asparagus. If you have never had fresh asparagus, it is a real treat. It tastes nothing like what you get at a restaurant or the grocery store. It is super-sweet, and I often eat them raw because they are so sweet.
This spear arrived two weeks earlier in the year compared to last year.

I have not heard back from everyone, but I have provided a list for everyone from whom I heard back. I will update the list if I hear from any others.

These apples are "semi self-fertile", which means that they will usually produce enough fruit for homeowner use but would bear much more heavily with a proper pollinator.
Red Delicious: Large fruit, red waxy skin, pure white flesh. Bears more heavily when pollinized with Yellow Delicious. Ripens: September-October.
Yellow Delicious: Large fruit, golden yellow. Excellent pollinizer variety. Ripens: September-October.
Mollie's Delicious: Very large, yellow skin with red blush. Pollinate with Granny Smith. Ripens: Late July- August.

Blue Giant (Texas Blue Giant): Large fruit, purple skin, amber flesh.
Celeste: Small to medium sized, light brown fig with pink flesh and a tightly closed eye. One of the best tasting varieties, produces best off the previous year's wood. Proven to have excellent cold resistance.
Texas Everbearing: Medium to large, bell-shaped fig, brownish-yellow skin, amber flesh. Bears young, tolerates colder areas.

Golden Glory (Dwarf cultivar): Very large fruit, gold skin with light red blush, yellow flesh. Freestone. The smallest growing peach tree available (5' tall at maturity). Good for smaller locations. Ripens: August.
Belle of Georgia: Medium sized, white-fleshed fruit. Freestone. Ripens: mid-July.
Elberta: Large, elongated fruit. Golden yellow skin, flushed with red where exposed to sun. Yellow flesh, freestone.
Florida King: Medium, semi-cling fruit. Florida King is one of the earliest season peaches around. Ripens: mid-May.
Harvester: Medium to large fruit, bright red skin evenly blushed over yellow. Acidic, yellow flesh. Ripens uniformly instead of staggered ripening. Freestone. Ripens: late June.
Loring: Large, yellow skin with red blush, yellow flesh. Freestone. Ripens: mid-July.
Ranger: Large, brightly colored red skin, yellow flesh. Late blooming, good for colder areas, heavy producer. Freestone. Ripens: early July.
Redskin: Large, deep red skin over yellow. Yellow flesh, good for eating or canning. Freestone. Ripens: early August.
Sentinel: Medium to large fruit, yellow skin with red blush. One of the sweetest peaches, semi-freestone. Ripens: mid-June.
Pears
Ayers: Yellow fruit with red blush, semi-self fertile. Ripens: August.
Kieffer: One of the best self-pollinating pears, greenish yellow skin blushed red, stores well, coarse texture (high stone cell count). Ripens: October to November.
Moonglow: Large, brownish-green skin, soft flesh, juicy, low grit. Best with Bartlett as a pollinator. Ripens: early August.
Orient: Large, round, yellow skin. Smooth texture, better production with pollinizer, either Bartlett or Kieffer.

Bartlett: The #1 pear in the world for a reason, large, smooth, yellow skin with white flesh. Vigorous grower, self-fertile but better production with a pollinator. Pollinates other pear types well.
Persimmons
All persimmons listed here are fully self-fertile.
Fuyu Giant: Orange skin, non-astringent flavor, round to semi-oblong and large. Bears from an early age, no seeds unless planted with other varieties. Ripens: November.
Tanenashi: Medium size, cone-shaped fruit, orange skin, seedless, astringent. Bears from an early age. Ripens: October.
Plums
Bruce: Large fruit, red skin and flesh, early ripening variety. Needs a pollinizer like Methley. One of the largest fruiting plums in the area. Ripens: mid-late May.
Methley: Medium fruit, purple skin, amber-red flesh. Fully self-fertile. Ripens: early June.
Morris: requires pollinizer, large, round, deep-red skin, bright red flesh. Outstanding flavor. Excellent disease resistance. Ripens: mid-June.
Santa Rosa: Large, oval plums, purplish-red skin with blue highlights, yellow flesh to dark red near the skin. Self-fertile. Ripens: mid-June.
Pomegranates
Wonderful: Extra-large fruit, red skin, red flesh, the most commercially available pomegranate. Ripens: September.
Grapes
Flame: nearly-seedless red, color may fade in hot summers but fruit quality does not, medium table grape. Leave long canes on this grape to train along wires or trellises, as it develops the best fruitwood away from the main cane. (Cane prune) Ripens: late July.
Perlette: large white grape, seedless variety. (Cane prune) Ripens: Mid-July.
Seibel 9110: large white-yellow fruit in large clusters. Wine or table variety. Prune back to within several buds of the main canes to leave small spurs for the development of new wood. (Spur prune) Ripens: August to September.
Summer Royal: medium-sized black seedless grape. (Cane prune) Table variety. Ripens: August.
Pecans
All pecan varieties do better with a pollinator, but some are more self-fertile than others.
Cheyenne: early shedder, soft-shell medium-sized pecan, excellent flavor, early producing. Good pollinator for other varieties. Ripens: late Sept-early October.
Choctaw: late shedder, very large nutmeat, soft shell, good quality. Early bearing, semi self-fertile. Ripens: late Oct-early November.
Desirable: early shedder, large, medium-soft shell. Semi self-fertile. Ripens: late Oct-early November.
Pawnee: early shedder, soft shell, early ripening - ripens late September.

This gardening to-do list is focused on zone 8 and further south, but it should also be germane for zone 7.
Plant fruit trees and shrubs - bare-root and potted
Prune fruit trees (wait until after fruiting for the fruit bushes)
Prune shade and ornamental trees, along with bush form roses and evergreen plants
Start vegetable seeds and transplant per the following schedule - Planting Schedule.
Transplant any plants, shrubs, or trees needing to be moved.
Fertilize lawn and beds with organic fertilizer.
Add compost and topdress mulch.
Test ph for blueberry beds. Take measures to acidify the soil with sulfur or acidified mulch if necessary
Water as needed. Frequent watering will not be necessary, but don't let your beds completely dry out.
Plant cold weather annuals - e.g. petunias, pansies, pinks, alyssum, etc.

If you are planning to add some peach trees to your landscape, now is the time to order them. Texas A&M recommends that peach trees be planted before March 1st.
In this post, I have listed the varieties that Texas A&M and several other growers recommend as being well suited for growing in North Texas and which have good or acceptable taste.
Depending upon the variety, peaches can ripen anytime from April until August. Consequently, it is a good idea to plant a mixture of cultivars that will provide you with fruit over an extended period.
Peaches Preferred By Local Growers
Jim Kamas was kind enough to offer his opinions on some of the best and most flavorful peach varieties to grow in Texas. He is an Assistant Professor & Extension Horticulturist for Fruits at Texas A&M's Department of Horticultural Sciences. He is also the author of the upcoming Texas Peach Handbook which should be coming out later this year.
The first peach variety that Jim suggests is Harvester. He describes Harvester as a semi-freestone peach with outstanding flavor and good, but not excessive firmness that colors well. It has an "[e]xcellent sugar/acid balance and when fully ripe, the flesh pulls away from the pit quite easily." The fruit of this variety are of a good size, and it is a consistent producer that ripens in mid-June in North Texas.
Jim also recommends Loring, especially for home owners. Loring ripens about the fourth of July and can produce exceptionally large peaches, often reaching three and a half inches in diameter. According to Jim, this variety is "highly prized for its outstanding flavor and some commercial growers get premium prices because of consumer demand." It can be "a little finicky in setting a large crop, but for homeowners it is an excellent choice of a mid-season freestone variety."
For mid-July, Jim Kamas' favorite peach cultivar is Redskin. Redskin is a consistent producer of good sized, deeply colored fruit with the occasional bit of red color in the flesh. "Fully freestone, Redskin is among the most flavorful peaches grown in our area and has been a reliable standard variety for homeowners and commercial growers alike." It is also commonly the variety of choice for canning or freezing.
Bob Wells of Bob Wells Nursery independently agrees with Mr. Kamas. Bob's three favorite peach varieties are also Redskin, Loring, and Harvester.
Dale and Judy Ham, who operate Ham Orchard in Terrell, Texas, offer a few additional, recommended choices for planting in your orchard. In addition to Loring, the Hams prefer Red Globe, Bounty, and Dixiland for North and East Texas. All are freestone peaches that ripen the first of Juy to July 23rd or 24th.
Red Globe is a freestone variety producing a large, round, dark red skinned peach with yellow flesh. This variety is eye appealling, and some sources state that it requires approximately 850 chilling hours. It ripens in the first half of July.
Bounty is described as a very good, large, smooth skinned peach. It is a high quality late bloomer. It is an attractive, freestone fruit with a cherry-red blush and yellow flesh. Some sources state that it requires approximately 800 chilling hours. It ripens in the first half of July.
Dixiland is described as a popular freestone peach with good color. According to some sources, it requires approximately 750 chilling hours. It ripens in the second half of July.
Glynn and Sandra Russell operate Newburn Farms in Center, Texas and their favorite selections are Red Globe and Harvester. As to these two varieties, they think the "best East Texas peach is the Red Globe. It matures around the first of July and has a sweet and mild taste with melting flesh." Harvester is hardy and the first freestone to ripen. The Russells describe Harvester as having excellent taste with a stronger flavor of peach than Red Globe.
Of additional interest, in an article in Mother Earth News, the author polled several growers who rated the top flavored peaches to be: Reliance, Saturn, Redhaven, Tropic Snow and May Pride.
Reliance: Reliance produces a medium sized fruit that is dark red splashed over a yellow background. This freestone peach is sweet, flavorful, and good for canning, freezing and fresh use. The tree is vigorous, fast growing, and has showy, bright pink blossoms. It is a late blooming variety. It is cold hardy and some sources state that it requires approximately 1,000 chilling hours. Fruits ripen in June.
Saturn: Also known as the Peento peach, the fruit of this variety are shaped like a doughnut, without the hole. They have large, showy double pink self-fertile flowers. The very sweet and tangy, large yellow fruit has melting white flesh. Some sources state that it requires approximately 400 chilling hours. The tree is vigorous, spreading, and resistant to bacterial leaf spot. Ripens in early July with Redhaven.
Redhaven: This is a widely planted freestone peach. Its fruit are medium to large sized and have firm yellow flesh. High quality yellow freestone. Some sources state that it requires approximately 950 chilling hours. It ripens in early July.
Tropic Snow: Tropic Snow has creamy white, delicious flesh and is a freestone type peach. Balanced acid and sugar, with superb flavor. It ripens in May, and some sources state that it requires approximately 200 chilling hours. It is from Florida, and was introduced in 1988.
May Pride: This variety produces a very early-ripening peach for warm winter climates. Ripening in May, it has delicious, sweet and tangy fruit. Very large for such an early peach. It requires approximately 175-200 hours. It is a patented variety from Zaiger.

Rootstock
When selecting your trees, it is very important to look closely at the rootstock upon which the trees are grafted. The rootstock will dictate how large the tree will get. You do not want to plant a tree that will get too big for the space in which you are placing it. You will be very disappointed and, along with the additional work entailed, the additional pruning to keep its size in check may adversely impact fruit production.

Peaches are self-fruitful.
Considerations When Planting
This is not intended to be a guide for planting an peach tree. If you are looking for that kind of guidance, I recommend that you visit this link for a pretty thorough "how-to" primer.
Nevertheless, when you plant your trees, I encourage you to add compost, Mycorrhizal fungi, and Actinovate to the backfill when you are planting.
Finally, in caring for your peach trees, I have found that the occasional spraying of Garrett Juice or compost tea seems to ward off problems for me.
Ideas on Nurseries
If you are looking for an instant orchard, your choices are limited. Check now with your local nurseries to see what varieties they are or will be caring this Spring and in what sizes. I typically only see 5 gallon containers in my local nurseries.
Bob Wells Nursery will often carry 5, 10, and 15 gallon trees, so you can try that.
Willis Orchard Company sells large trees; however be forewarned that these are going to be bare-rooted plants which can sometimes demand more TLC. (I no longer recommend using Willis Orchard Company as I have now discovered that they sent me several fruit trees that were completely different varieties. For example, they sent me standard pears instead of the asian pears I ordered!!)
Edible Landscaping also sometimes carries larger sized specimen.
